Project 3-Light
Making Form & Order
By Sebastian Alvarez (ARC 257)
The purpose of this project is to design a non-denominational chapel placed on the Farmingdale State College campus. The college wants this building to be a place where people of all faiths can come feeling safety and peace while taking time to reflect on whatever is on their minds.

The college feels that this building can be accomplished by the creative use of light. Different techniques such as backlighting reflectors and light cannons can be used to control the entrance of light into a space. Curved, complex walls are also used in the solution that creates unique lighting.

Background Research
I was assigned to research Frank Lloyd Wrights "Unity Temple". Located in Oak Park, Illinois and built in 1908.

Section plan of Unity Temple.
Interior views of Unity Temple. Although Frank Lloyd Wright was a greatly respected architect he did not utilize light to the best of his ability. These are a lesson on what not to do when using light.
